Synopsis

This companion novel to Out of Many Waters tells the story of Isobel's 16-year-old sister, Maria, who escapes on a separate ship, and eventually lands in Amsterdam.

Children's Literature

In this sequel to Out of Many Waters, Maria and her sister Isobel escape from Catholic Monks who kidnapped them and dozens of other Jewish children during the Portuguese Inquisition in the 1600s. During their escape, Maria and Isobel must separate (Out of Many Waters follows Isobel's dramatic experiences). Maria stows herself on a boat headed for Amsterdam. Once there, the famous Dutch artist Rembrandt gives her a job and a place to live and helps her look for her family. As she adjusts to her new life in Amsterdam, Maria continues her desperate search for her parents and her sister. Effective historical fiction, this novel not only provides authentic information about life in 17th century Europe but also creates compelling characters. 2000 (orig. 1994), Walker & Company, $16.95 and $8.95. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Rebecca Joseph
