Overview

Mostly Italian, but also other European and American scholars of ontology, philosophy, computer science, and information science review fundamental theoretical issues regarding ontologies, and demonstrate with real case studies the effectiveness of the ontological approach in interoperable information systems for medicine. Among the topics are bodily systems and the spatial-functional structure of the human body, context-based task ontologies for clinical guidelines, an ontological framework for implementing clinical guidelines in health care organizations, and evolving from standard vocabularies to formal ontology for an information system dedicated to organ transplantation. The nine papers were presented at an October 2003 workshop in Rome. There is no subject index. Annotation Β©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
