Synopsis

Over the next 2 years around 50 titles will be published, covering a comprehensive range of disciplines within medicine and health sciences. In a handy 152mm x 122mm size, and between 250-350 pages, these pocket atlases will contain up-to-the-minute information on their subject, which has been compiled, distilled and updated from prior work by each author. Each mini-atlas will also contain a free CDROM or DVDROM with material to accompany and complement the text. The "Anshan Gold Standard Mini Atlas Series" will appeal to everyone involved in medicine and health sciences, from undergraduates to private practitioners, from medical professionals and academics. The full series will develop into an outstanding resource for any medical library, and each individual title will be a great value-for-money addition to a personal collection, for use as a portable reference for work or home. The first books will publish in January 2007, with a consistent flow of additional titles each month throughout 2007.

Reviewer:Nicholas N Volpe, MD(University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine)
Description:This handbook atlas of ophthalmic surgery provides photographs accompanied by concise text in outline format accompanied by a DVD of select surgical procedures.
Purpose:The author's purpose is to provide an understanding of surgical techniques that are relevant to everyday ophthalmology. Dr. Saxena does achieve this goal. He has selected common procedures in various ophthalmic disciplines, then explained the practical steps through photos, diagrams, and text.
Audience:The author intends this book for experienced ophthalmologists, postgraduates, and residents in training. Although the book provides a simple description of common procedures that may be most helpful to residents and students of ophthalmology, the surgical videos are a nice resource for practicing ophthalmologists.
Features:This effort is unique in its attempt to provide an atlas of ophthalmic surgery in a concise handbook format. It describes chosen procedures in the fields of orbital, intraocular, and extraocular surgery. A shortcoming lies in the sparse descriptions of procedures, which serve more as an introduction to the topics rather than a comprehensive description. Although the topics are well illustrated, the book has a limited scope and reviews only selected procedures. The main asset of this atlas may be the accompanying DVD, which provides masterful videos of various ophthalmic procedures. Coverage of the anterior segment is particularly well done, with helpful diagrams interspersed with surgical videos. Narration of the procedures would have added to the instructional value.
Assessment:This is a useful resource for residents in training who wish to see and learn about common surgical procedures. The clear photos, simple illustrations, and accompanying DVD enhance this work. Comprehensive ophthalmologists wishing to refresh their knowledge in various subjects may also find this a useful resource. This is well worth its price and is unique in its organization and content.
