School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up-This volume begins with a broad-brush history of organized crime on an international basis. Completely eschewing sensational stories, Ryan objectively defines and describes various criminal organizations. He supports his narrative with an extensive chronology covering the 1850s to the present, a classified set of biographical sketches of members, "interdictors" (law enforcement personnel), and a large number of (mostly academic) researchers. Other chapters present facts and data, including extracts of relevant laws; a bibliographic essay on books, government documents, and journals; and nonprint resources. He also includes an extensive glossary and index, but no illustrations. This resource will be useful to advanced students of American history and social problems, but will not attract general readers.-Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Edmonds, WA
