Gr 3-5-- Three welcome additions to U. S. history sections, especially for those collections that support resource-based teaching. Ayer has selected 22 monuments, memorials, historic sites, and parks as a representative sample of Our National Monuments . Each entry includes information about its history, creators, significance , and location. The final chapter focuses on the preservation of these special places, including suggestions for visitors. Johnson effectively presents the background and role of Our Constitution in the formation and implementation of the United States government. This basic introduction will capture the interest of readers who may wish to pursue further related topics, such as women's suffrage and the Indian Civil Rights Act. Fritz's Shh! We're Writing the Constitution , (Putnam, 1987) and the Maestros's A More Perfect Union (Lothrop, 1987) are more accessible to younger readers. Schleifer traces the history and significance of Our Declaration of Independence in an interesting, well-written text that highlights several individuals who played important roles in its creation. The full text of the document is appended. All three titles are written in interesting and readable styles; they are complemented and enhanced by well-selected photographs and reproductions. --Janie Schomberg, Leal Elementary School, Urbana, ILBook Details
