Synopsis
The I Know America series offers young readers a special way in which to learn about the history of our country. Each book in the series explains the origins of things that are distinctly American, using folklore, popular culture, and history as a rich and fascinating background.
Has our flag always had thirteen stripes with stars in the canton? Who started the idea of Memorial Day? Where did the symbol of Uncle Sam come from? These are just a few of the questions that are explained in this unique series.
In addition to covering our nation's past, the I Know America books discuss each topic within the context of contemporary American life. Through these discussions, readers will gain a fuller understanding of our diverse heritage and will better appreciate what it means to be American.
Children's Literature
Stephanie St. Pierre supplements her fine perspective on Our National Anthem with facts about the U.S. in 1814, Ft. McHenry as it is today, respecting and performing "The Star-Spangled Banner," and a glossary for youngsters who might find some of its words unfamiliar. Ms. St. Pierre's illustrations include a photo of Key's "original" poem. Have students compare the unidentical three to discover how "original" can be misleading and why good research requires multiple references.
