VOYA
Factually based doom, gloom, and a bit of hope fill the pages of the books in this series. The writers are consistent in seeming to accept as true the dire predictions of consequences that will occur worldwide between the years 2025 and 2050 if little or no action is taken by governments and individual citizens. Possible solutions are suggested, often putting pressure on wealthy nations to help those less developed, assuming that assistance will be accepted and damaging policies changed. A futuristic mini-story sets the mood at the beginning of each chapter, whereas at the end, a "What would you do?" scenario is presented. Recommended responses are provided in an epilogue. This series is a suitable resource for debaters. Presented in easy-to-read language, the often-tragic dilemmas might challenge readers to reflect on them after completing each book. Assorted writers use a uniform style and format. The text is broken up by goodsized fact boxes and large color photographs, and is surrounded by plenty of white space. Other books in the series include AIDS and Other Epidemics, Earth's Garbage Crisis, Earth's Water Crisis, Endangered Species, Global Warming, Obesity Epidemic, Poverty, and Rain Forest Destruction. One disappointment is the very limited number of books and Web sites listed for further information. Reviewer: Pam Carlson
