Synopsis

nd The 22 meeting of the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (LS. O. T. T. ) of which this volume is the scientific proceedings, was held in Istanbul, Turkey on August 22-26, 1994. It was a historical occasion in that it was almost 200 years to the day that one of the founding fathers of oxygen research, Antoine Lavoisier, on May 8, 1794 found his early demise at the hands of the guillotine. This spirit of history set the tone of the conference and in the opening lecture the contribution that this part of the world has given to the understanding of oxygen transport to tissue was highlighted. In particular, the contribution of Galen of Pergamon (129-200) was discussed who for the first time demon strated that blood flowed through the arteries and whose view on the physiology of the circulation dominated the ancient world for well over a millennium. A forgotten chapter in the history of the circulation of the blood is the contribution made by Ibn al Nafis of Damascus (1210-1280) who for the first time described the importance of the pulmonary circulation by stating that all venous blood entering the right ventricle ofthe heart passes to the left ventricle, not through pores in the septum of the heart as had been postulated by Galen, but through the circulation of the lungs.

Editorials

Wayne M. Samuelson

This volume contains the proceedings of the meeting of the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue held in August 1994. The main themes of the conference were methods for assessment of oxygenation, physiology of oxygen transport, organ systems in disease, and restoration of impaired oxygenation. In these proceedings, the editors hope to provide a standard reference on oxygen in physiologic and pathophysiologic systems. This lofty goal is accomplished in great measure. These published proceedings represent the work of some world authorities on oxygen transport and delivery. The book is written for basic scientists in pulmonary medicine. Workers in the field of critical care medicine will also be interested. The editors and participants in the conference are respected authorities in the field. The black-and-white illustrations and diagrams are appropriate to the subject matter. Each chapter is referenced with pertinent references. The index is rather spare, but when used in combination with the table of contents, it is sufficient. As a compilation of the proceedings of an important international meeting, the book is unique in that it brings a variety of related works together as a single reference. It is essential to the advancement of scientific knowledge that workers in the field communicate, and these proceedings provide a forum for this exchange of information. The proceedings are valuable for all investigators in the field. Each subsequent edition provides new information reflecting the progress made since the last assembly. This volume is useful to basic scientists in pulmonary medicine and workers in the field of critical care. Clinicians will find this ofsomewhat lesser utility, although it would also be a useful reference for them.

Booknews

This volume contains 84 transcripts of presentations, which are centered around four major topics: methods for assessment of oxygenation; the physiology of oxygen transport; organ system in disease; and restoration of oxygen in disease. Subjects include: cerebral oxygenation during cardiopulmonary bypass, reflectance pulse oximetry, the effect of capillary blood flow on the oxygen release into rat heart tissue, hypoxia/ischemia and the pH paradox, oxygen transport in tumors, the lung in distress, extracorporeal oxygenation, and pulmonary mechanics during laparoscopic surgery.
