Overview

Now in its second edition,Paediatric Exercise Science and Medicine is the leading reference work designed to support and challenge those involved in developmental exercise science and medicine. Since the publication of the first edition, the paediatric sub-specialty has become firmly established as a major component of sport and exercise medicine and this is reflected by a marked increase in research activity and publication. Experimental methods pioneered with adults have been successfully adapted for use with children and new non-invasive techniques have been developed and applied to paediatric research to provide new insights into understanding the exercising child.
Incorporating the latest research from established, internationally recognized authors and new contributors who have emerged as leading researchers since the publication of the first edition, each chapter has been comprehensively updated to reflect evidence-based advances in knowledge. The book is extensively cross-referenced to promote access to complementary material and each chapter ends with a bulleted summary to support the rapid identification of key issues.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Synopsis

In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest worldwide, and a growing recognition of the importance and relevance of sports for children and adolescents. Paediatric Exercise Science and Medicine is the definitive text on an area that is rapidly growing in interest. Written by a team of international authorities, the book explains the principles of developmental exercise science, assessment of performance, the promotion of young people's health and well-being, and the clinical diagnosis and management of sports injuries in children and adolescents. Aimed primarily at exercise and sports scientists, sports medicine physicians, paediatricians, and clinicians dealing with young athletes, the book will also be of interest to physical educators and physiotherapists.

Edward M. Heath

This book, written by experts from throughout the world, contains an enormous range of topics on children and their participation in exercise and sport. "The purpose is to provide an all-inclusive review of all aspects of the emerging discipline of pediatric exercise science and medicine. Because of the newness of the field of pediatric exercise science, the objective of writing a review book is a worthwhile one that the editors and contributors meet. "It is written for professionals in the field of developmental exercise science and medicine but will also serve students well who aspire to enter the profession in related fields. The editors and contributors are world renowned in exercise science, public health, and medicine. "Each section is essential to a review of pediatric issues in exercise science. The contributors begin with assessment and developmental aspects of pediatric exercise science and then go into health issues, including chronic health conditions and injuries. Covering so many areas dealing with assessment magnifies the importance of the assessment section. In the effort to include all aspects of pediatric exercise science and medicine, the coverage of topics is short but the editors include large reference lists for the reader to pursue further reading. "Because there are few, if any, review books in pediatric exercise science, this comprehensive review will serve as an invaluable reference for all of those in the area. The editors have done a superb job of soliciting experts from all over the world to contribute.
