From The Critics

Reviewer: Matthew L. Black, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This book is part of a multivolume series that organizes the largest and most comprehensive collection of teaching visuals in the field of anesthesia. This sixth volume in the series provides an overview of the medical subspecialty of pain management. Concepts of scientific basis, physiology, diagnosis, psychological impact, and treatment spectrums are reinforced throughout the pictorial explanations. Topics in this volume were chosen to provide the reader with an overview of the perception of pain, the pathophysiology of some of the more common pain problems, and current treatment options.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide current teaching visual aids in the field of anesthesia and the subspecialty of pain medicine. This task is an important one and was accomplished admirably is this book by surveying the world's experts.
Audience: The audience is all health personnel who work with anesthesia and pain management. The pain physician who is in private practice, in a teaching institution, or in a training fellowship would benefit the most from this superb collection of visuals.
Features: The book surveys all aspects of pain management. General categories are scientific and physiological understandings of pain, common painful syndromes, psychology of pain, physical rehabilitation, outcome assessment, and clinical administration. The book features outstanding organization and color pictorials. The dramatic drawings, pictures, charts, and algorithms enhance understanding of the straightforward text explanations.
Assessment: The overall quality of the book is outstanding. This is the first book of its kind in anesthesia.. I would recommend this book to all pain physicians, and especially to all pain management teaching programs.
