Synopsis
In insightful interviews, twelve American painters, representing emerging, established, or mature career stages, discuss their family backgrounds, training, experiences, and personal and artistic development.
Library Journal
Editor Jeffri, founder and director of the Research Center for Arts and Crafts (RCAC) of Columbia University , editor of Artisthelp ( LJ 4/15/90) , and former executive editor of The Journal of Arts Management and Law , has compiled interviews with 12 painters as part of a large-scale oral history project initiated by the RCAC. Artists were selected to ` `provide demographic, ethnic, and gender balance and to represent varying career stages.'' An informative capsule history of art in America is included in the introduction. While the information contained in the interviews may be insightful, reading verbatim conversations is tedious and less effective than hearing them. Still, the book is beneficial in parts for anyone researching a specific artist or as a path to more in-depth study. Appropriate for academic libraries with art programs and larger public libraries with interested patrons.-- Vicki Gadberry, Memo rial Lib ., Mars Hill Coll ., N . C.
