School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-Pakistan opens with a basic overview that should be sufficient for most reports: geography, history, government, economy, people and lifestyle, language, arts, leisure, and foods. Readers are often referred to the following "A Closer Look" section where spreads in alphabetical order treat in more depth such topics as air pollution, carpet weaving, cricket, or the status of women. The brief conclusion covers relations with North America and is followed by a clear, colorful map; a fine glossary of Pashtu, Punjabi, and Urdu words, as well as one of potentially unfamiliar English vocabulary; a bibliography; and an extensive index. The lucid, objective, and current text (through 2001) is supported by an open format with numerous attractive, informative, full-color photographs, making this an excellent update to older works about a country much in the news recently.-Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
