Overview
As if putting an arm around the reader's shoulder and extending an invitation for a walk, Oates speaks about nature, civilization, and self discovery. His reflections encompass many kinds of literature, the rhetoric of the environmental movement, and some of the environmental issues in the West (forests, salmon, Hanford nuclear reservation, Native American issues), as well as the nuances of his personal experiences with nature and the evolution of his thinking.
