Gr 7-12-- As with other volumes in the series, Paranormal Phenomena presents pro and con stances on controversial issues. This particular title is distinctive, however, in that it suggests various methods for evaluating the diverse opinions expressed and for challenging the writers' expertise. There are checklists, open-ended questions, and ideas to stimulate discussion. Through these techniques, readers are shown how to develop the critical thinking skills necessary to weigh the validity of one point of view over another. General paranormal phenomena, UFOs, alien abductions, ESP, astrology (mainly in terms of prediction), Nostradamus's predictions, mediums, contact with spirits through channeling or quackish fake channeling, reincarnation, and near-death experiences are covered, with at least one strongly held opinion on each side to challenge or support that belief. An above-average overview of the field of parapshychology.-- Leslie Chamberlin, Napa City-County Library, CA
