School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-Toddler discusses discipline, feeding, toilet training, and health and safety. Infant treats daily care, health and safety, breast- and bottle-feeding, and introducing solids. Both books offer concise, practical advice about the physical and emotional needs of young children, suggest games and activities, and include possible solutions for such typical problems as temper tantrums and getting children to sleep. Quotes from teen dads and moms are highlighted in colorful boxes. Spot color photos show children of various races. The format makes information available to teens who would be intimidated by traditional child-care books. Short chapter overviews, brief explanations, and subtitles make the information accessible to students who don't like to read. Jeanne W. Lindsay's Your Baby's First Year (Morning Glory, 1998) covers some of the same information in greater depth and with denser text, although, with black-and-white photos, it is not as appealing. William Sears's The Baby Book (Little, Brown, 1993) is much more comprehensive.-Sandra L. Doggett, Urbana High School, Ijamsville, MD Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
