Heeding the "garbage in, garbage out" truism in the new area of particle computer modeling and simulation<-->the study of the dynamic behavior of solids and fluids in response to external forces, Greenspan (U. of Texas, Arlington) concentrates on ensuring the validity of the inputs: i.e. the approximate solving of initial value problems for systems of ordinary differential equations. The tripartite analysis consists of: mathematical, physical, and numerical considerations; qualitative (dare we say intuitive?) Newtonian modeling; and quantitative modeling (including an application of Special Relativity). Appendices provide FORTRAN programs and related formulas.
