Overview

Adoption of a user-centered design (UCD) focus has immensely enriched the health industry. Application of UCD concepts are key to successful development of e-services, including e-health.

Patient-Centered E-Health presents the perspective of a distinct form of e-health that is patient-focused, patient-aware, patient-empowered, and patient-active. This must-have book for researchers, educators, and healthcare practitioners addresses the special characteristics of the e-health domain through a user-centered design, providing foundational topics in areas such as patient-centered design methods, psychological aspects of online health communication, and e-health marketing.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Jillian A Easton, BDS MS(University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery)
Description: In exploring patient-centered electronic healthcare, the development of systems, and the practicality of application, this book provides a redefinition of the healthcare provider and patient.
Purpose: The book examines the philosophy, structure, and research methodologies of electronic health records while discussing practical applications, usability, and design with a focus on patient users.
Audience: This is written for both practitioners and students. Readers will benefit particularly from the discussion regarding privacy and the e-health needs of the patient as consumer.
Features: The book discusses design, psychology, privacy management, and the role of the patient/consumer. One section that stands out is an assessment of the benefits for self management of chronic disease. Diagrams and illustrations would improve the book.
Assessment: This is a valuable addition to the literature and should be reviewed as a clinical practice considers developing electronic patient records. Of particular note is the notion of patient-empowered e-health and the examples of patient-centered e-health implementation in actual applications.
