From The Critics

Reviewer: Francine R. Margolius, EdD, RN(Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing)
Description: This book, one of a new series entitled Concepts and Activities, provides basic content about growth and development from infancy to adolescence, common pediatric health issues, major disorders, and related medical and nursing management of children. No information is given about the author's pediatric clinical experience. The reviewers are from various parts of the country, but their experience with pediatric nursing is unclear.
Purpose: The author describes the basic purpose as a pediatric core content study guide for use as a supplement to a major pediatric textbook or as a free standing reference book. Illustrations for some of the complex disorders discussed would help clarify the information. This book is useful as a quick reference for growth and development concepts, review of major disorders and surgical procedures often found in the pediatric population.
Audience: Students in BSN, AD, and Diploma nursing programs are the target audience. The conciseness and brevity of the book will be appealing to students who are seeking a quick review for basic information in pediatric nursing. The study questions are helpful in focusing on pertinent aspects of each chapter.
Features: Each chapter includes clear objectives and an overview of concepts. The various tables are well organized and easy to follow. The study questions at the end of each chapter capture the essence of the information presented. The 28 selected references range from 1965 to 1994, with one 1994 reference.
Assessment: This book serves as a useful quick reference study guide for basic information about children including growth and development concepts and some major disorders. Suggestions for medical and nursing management as well as teaching interventions are very helpful. The information presented is concise and well organized. Although similar books are available, nursing students will be attracted to the brevity of the content and suggestions for nursing interventions.
