Overview
The 2nd Edition of this text remains the most concise, readable pediatric nursing text for use in RN programs. The very visual approach, with abundant four-color photos and drawings throughout, extensive marginal notes, chapter opening vignettes and other pedagogical devices -- plus the heavy emphasis on community nursing -- makes this the new cornerstone of pediatric nursing texts. In addition to the excellent coverage of the first edition, a new chapter has been added on pediatrics in home and community health settings, including discharge planning. The chapters on fluid and electrolytes and acid-base balance have been combined; coverage of pathophysiology, AIDS, neonatology, sickle cell anemia, Down Syndrome, and mental retardation has been increased.
FEATURES:
- "Care of Child in the Community" theme throughout
- New nursing care plans with a community focus
- New color design with color coded icons enhances student learning
- Complete updates and new information throughout
- Cultural diversity emphasized and portrayed
- Separate color "Pediatric Clinical Skills" is included with each text
- Increased pathophysiology makes concepts more clear and specific
- clinical vignettes open each chapter and focus the student on critical thinking.
The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.
Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Beverly C. Bradley, RN, MSN(Trident Technical College)Description: This is a well organized, basic textbook for nursing students learning to care for sick children in a variety of settings.
Purpose: The authors accomplish their stated purpose of designing a compact book with basic information that can be covered in a short amount of time and still focus attention on current concepts in healthcare. The text is formatted to include essential information needed for safe and effective practice.
Audience: This book can be used by undergraduate ADN or BSN students or practicing nurses who need a review.
Features: While the majority of content is related to health problems in body systems, information is also presented on growth and development, health assessment, pain management, effects of illness, and the nurse's role. The logical organization and user-friendly appearance is appealing to inexperienced students. The illustrations are particularly effective in supporting text information. The skills booklet provides a quick reference for students and practitioners. The only shortcoming is that in some instances, students may need to search other references for more in-depth information.
Assessment: In view of the trend for larger textbooks, this book has refreshing simplicity. The complexity of existing books can be overwhelming to students. While there is risk for shorter texts to be too shallow, the credible authors have done a good job of providing a book that is simple yet complex enough to facilitate obtaining in-depth understanding of critical topics. The second edition is stronger than the first in the emphasis of pathophysiology. The attention to care in the community and home settings and involvement of family makes this book a timely reference for nursing care in today's healthcare environment.
