Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a sexually transmitted disease caused by gonorrhea or chlamydia. It most often occurs in young women and may go undetected for years. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a disease that is sexually transmitted. PID is usually caused by gonorrhea or Chlamydia, which are results from unprotected sex. Doctors may examine and check for these two diseases and find that the patient has PID. However, this disease is often hard to diagnose because it usually has no symptoms of the infection. Some women may experience mild abdominal pain, which may be misdiagnosed. Women who have severe cases that may have been previously undetected could have a high fever, vomiting, severe abdominal pain and even an ovarian abscess. Most of the time PID is treated with antibiotics; however, if there is a ruptured abscess surgery may be necessary. Since PID is contagious, the person who is infected must tell their sexual partner so that they may get treatment. Even though PID is treatable, lifetime complications could occur. Rupture of abscesses, peritonitis, ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus wall), chronic pelvic pain, and infertility are problems that can happen. A newborn baby can get Chlamydia from his infected mother. The child may have conjunctivitis or pneumonia or both when born as a result of this disease. This educational book explains in careful details about PID, the causes, the treatment, the problems of the disease, and the prevention.
