Handcrafting pens has become a popular specialty area of woodturning, and many companies now offer reasonably priced miniature lathes, making the craft accessible even to beginners. This is the ideal way to use productively small pieces of material that may otherwise be discarded. Gross, owner of BG Artforms, gears his instructions toward beginners, though crafters of all skill levels will learn something. After describing the required equipment and materials (wood is the most common material, but Corian, horn, and acrylic are also used), he shows how to prepare the pen blanks for turning. His instructions for tool use are clear, as are his step-by-step instructions for assembly and finishing (color photographs show each step clearly). In 11 projects, Gross shows how to make a variety of shapes and styles and deal with varying handle materials. He also offers a detailed troubleshooting section, as well as tips for selling one's creations. An excellent introduction that should be part of most public library collections.
