Overview

Attractive, fun, and flexible, paper mosaics are a fabulous new way to decorate furniture, spruce up a picture frame, transform a tea tray, or embellish a book cover. And because they use many of the same tools as scrapbooking and rubber-stamping, crafters who already enjoy those arts will find the 10 techniques introduced here a perfect fit. The skills proceed from simple to more complicated, starting with the basic process of backing the paper with poster board, cutting the tiles, gluing the pieces, and sealing and protecting the finished product. Page after page reveals colorful and unique items, including coasters, refrigerator magnets, tissue box holders, a backgammon board, wall hangings, a lidded box, a lampshade, clocks, and decorative mirrors.

Paper mosaic is a type of faux ceramic constructed from colored paper cut into tile shapes, glued onto a form, and sealed with decoupage medium. There are many advantages to this process: it is much easier than ceramic mosaic; there is no grouting; when sealed, the mosaic is impervious to water; and paper can be textured and layered to beautiful effect. These projects, which call for techniques developed by paper artist Seymour, are bold and colorful and incorporate fanciful cutout shapes not found in conventional ceramic tiles. Her book on a new craft belongs in all crafts collections. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
