Markel and Greenbaum present a realistic guide on how to help adolescents struggling with learning disabilities or attention deficit disorder. They discuss the problems associated with these disorders as well as challenges facing young adults. The authors try to differentiate between two legislative mandates-Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990-by indicating which disorders and treatments are covered under which act. Chapters also contain information on the classroom and the educational system and how as students progress through the grades, their disorder becomes more difficult to handle. Crisis intervention and the assessment procedure are also mentioned. Many of the chapters that follow contain information on how to handle the coping mechanisms for these disorders in various disciplines or subjects, many techniques that can be utilized with all students. Throughout the book the authors have interspersed anecdotes of real students and their experiences before and after the interventions. This book is for anyone who deals with at-risk students. Index.
