From The Critics
Reviewer: Rebecca T. Horvat, PhD, D(ABMM)(University of Kansas Medical Center)Description: This book specifically reviews the current knowledge of the periplasmic space found in gram-negative bacteria. This space between the cytoplasm and the outermembrane of these bacteria is a separate compartment with specific physiologic processes that control the environment of the bacteria.
Purpose: The purpose is to bring together in one volume the research and discoveries of the unique nature of the periplasm. As more information about this distinctive compartment of gram-negative bacteria becomes known, it is clear that this space is very dynamic and essential to the organism. It is, in fact, the necessary element that serves to protect the bacteria from the environment and its own byproducts.
Audience: This book is written for scientists working on bacterial cell membranes, protein synthesis and secretion, and antibiotic activity. It is authored by some of the top researchers in this field.
Features: Sections cover protein secretion, protein folding, physiological processes, practical implications and protein composition. Within these areas there is some overlap, but it does not distract from the messages. The book covers such topics as the folding properties of outer membrane proteins and how they are delivered and assembled. It also shows how the bacteria respond to stress and how they reassemble their proteins during cell division. Toward the end of the book are several chapters that examine the production of recombinant proteins within the periplasmic space in order to protect and concentrate these products. This is a book densely packed with information, but it is also clear that there are still many unanswered questions regarding this compartment of gram-negative bacteria.
Assessment: This book would be useful to scientists working on gram-negative bacteria. The quality of the information is very good and I think it will enhance the work of understanding how the bacterial cell functions.
