Gr 4-6-A fact-filled, error-laden book. Brief chapters examine Peru's geography, government, capital city, and major sites, and topics such as food and religion. An examination of coca-leaf production discusses both the plight of poor farmers and the illegal and dangerous drug trade. Guidebook recommendations for museums, day trips, and other things to do "while you are there," or "if you plan to visit" appear throughout. Visuals include clear color photos, a few simple maps, and a graph. Unfortunately, the book's pluses are weighted down by a number of simplifications ("Peru is a medium-sized country") and errors. After a discussion of the number of languages spoken in rural areas and the consequent challenge of educating students, the author notes, "As a result, wealthier Peruvians, particularly those who live in the cities, pay to send their children to private schools." Throughout, the endangered Humboldt penguins are referred to as "Humboldt's penguins" and Islas Ballestas as "Isla Ballesta." There are also problems with some captions. Commentary under a photograph of Machu Picchu does not identify this archaeological site, referring instead to the "city of Cusco." Labels under the photos of the author Mario Vargas Llosa and Peru's president, Alejandro Toledo, have been transposed.
