Gr 7-12-- Peter the Great's struggle to modernize and unify Russia demonstrates the influence that one charismatic and driven person can exert upon a country. This biography, like others in the series, succeeds in presenting the complexities of its subject within the political, social, and historical context of the times without ovesimplification or obfuscation. Peter's accomplishments and successes are contrasted with his oppression and mistreatment of his subjects; none of this is glossed over or sugar-coated.
