Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Josie M. Bowman, DSN, RN(East Carolina University )
Description:This handbook on pharmacology for the surgical technologist presents information about administering medications and those medications that may be administered in the operative area. The material is basic and presents the essential material that surgical technologists should know.
Purpose:The author's purpose is to provide information that would be easily available to surgical technicians and at an appropriate level. The book is useful since some knowledge is needed for the individuals in the surgical setting, but not the same information that the registered nurse needs.
Audience:The author wrote the book for the students he worked with in the surgical arena. The book can also be used by most practicing surgical technicians and it is written at a level that healthcare workers can read, understand, and follow. The author is an LPN and has worked in the operating room for 13 years and as an educator for seven years.
Features:The handbook presents basic information about common medications used in the operating room. The subject material is easy to understand and the book presents the essential elements about the medications. One area of concern is the scope of practice of operating room technicians and whether this varies from hospital to hospitals.
Assessment:This useful handbook is unique with few, if any other, books available. It can be used for basic information and in a variety of settings.
