Description: This review, one of a series of Lippincott review books, provides an all-inclusive content review of pharmacology in outline format. The first two chapters focus on an overview of the pharmacological principles and the nurses' role. The following chapters address drug classifications and outline general information on classification, pharmacodynamics, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacokinetics, cautions/contraindications, drug interactions, side/adverse effects, and nursing management using the nursing process format.
Purpose: It provides key information needed for comprehensive pharmacology content review and functions well as a bedside reference. The book can be used to augment the study of pharmacology throughout a basic nursing program and to prepare for National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). It is not intended to replace formal learning or textbook reading.
Audience: It is designed for those who need information on a particular pharmacotherapeutic topic without the details of a formal textbook. The audience would include students, nurses, and nurse practitioners.
Features: Special features include icons indicating key concepts and nursing alerts as well as study questions after each chapter and a comprehensive examination at the end of the book. The answer keys with rationale for correct and incorrect responses are provided. The nursing management sections in each chapter are presented using the nursing process format.
Assessment: This book provides a comprehensive review of pharmacology content and is both easy to use and easy to read. There is opportunity for self-assessment at the end of each chapter and the questions are designed to reflect NCLEX components. The essential nursing actions for each drug classification are well presented. This is a valuable book, especially for nursing students, in preparing for both classroom exams and/or licensing examination.
