From The Critics
Reviewer: Theresa A Hart, AAS, BSN, MSNc(Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)Description: This book is part of a 9-book series designed to provide a pharmacology review in the format that facilitates studying for NCLEX. The book provides comprehensive review of classifications of drugs with pre- and post-test questions in different formats, including the rationale for correct and incorrect answers to the tests.
Purpose: This book was designed to support pharmacology knowledge in the format of NCLEX testing. The book provides excellent reviews of categories of drugs and therapies through a 9-book series. The format of NCLEX learning with rationale for correct and incorrect answers meets the authors objectives in a worthy manner.
Audience: The book was written for nursing students preparing for the NCLEX. It reaches its audience through a user friendly format and presentation of the material in multiple formats. The formats used are written question-answer, companion online access, and CD-ROM. The presentation and testing formats address the multiple learning styles of many different groups. The quality of contributing editors, review by a well credentialed editorial panel, and the use of student reviewers provide this book with both academic and end user validation.
Features: Chapters are arranged by drug classifications. Each chapter provides a pre- and post-test with rationale for correct and incorrect answers. The first chapter is an excellent review of safety and pharmacology not often seen in pharmacology books. Each drug monograph contains a section on client education, food interactions, drug interactions, and significant laboratory studies to provide extensive applicability to students in "real life." The CD-ROM and companion Web sites are a great feature for visual learners.
Assessment: "Though part of a series, the book stands alone with the information and format offered on the drug classifications it contains. The book resists the impulse to stray into standards of care while covering the drugs used in the various specialties. This aspect keeps the drug information clear of changing and updated standards that often date pharmacology books. It would be an excellent study guide and reference for the more experienced nurse as a reference. "
