Reviewer: Angela Johnston, PharmD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy)Description: This is a clinical reference tool that allows rapid access to information pertinent to patient care.
Purpose: The purpose of this manual, which is specifically designed for pharmacy students beginning clinical rotations, is to serve as a quick, clinical reference tool.
Audience: The target audience is primarily pharmacy students, but practicing pharmacists may also find this reference useful.
Features: This is a clinical service guide that offers rapid access to information pertaining to patient care in both the acute and ambulatory care settings. The manual is divided into 20 chapters, with each chapter focusing on a different aspect of clinical practice. It includes information on the following: normal laboratory values; common diagnostic tests; home test kits; physical examination; parenteral and enteral nutrition; and fluid and electrolyte therapy. In addition, the manual contains a brief overview of clinical pharmacokinetics, drug monitoring, and common pharmaceutical calculations. Also included is a description of a clinical pharmacist's role, such as standards of professional conduct, documentation, and approaches to evaluating drug-related problems, which provides students with knowledge about their role in patient care. There are also two useful appendixes: one of medical abbreviations, terms, and notations and one of common anatomic terms.
Assessment: This second edition is more comprehensive than the first in that it now provides information on the practice of pharmacy in the acute care setting as well as the ambulatory care setting and with the geriatric population. The manual serves as a concise reference tool that allows quick access to clinical information, such as normal laboratory values, descriptions of various diagnostic procedures, and common medical abbreviations. Overall, this reference may be of benefit to both pharmacy students and practicing pharmacists who are involved in clinical service.
