From The Critics

Reviewer: Margaret Pumfery, AAS, MLT, ASCP(Loyola University Medical Center)
Description: This handbook informs and instructs the healthcare provider of the "latest techniques, skill, and equipment" required to perform phlebotomy services. It is divided into five sections that range from a general overview to management and legal issues.
Purpose: The purpose is to inform and instruct those healthcare workers who are currently performing phlebotomy procedures. Its thrust is to bring employees up-to-date on new techniques while reiterating the proper procedures to be used in various phlebotomy situations.
Audience: Nurses, phlebotomists, and medical laboratory technicians would find this book very useful to review techniques and procedures. The book is written for those who already have a background in the medical environment.
Features: Illustrations are appropriate and pertinent. The color atlas is excellent with clear and concise diagrams and graphics. However, the placement of the atlas is not acceptable. The pages should be separated and be placed at either the end of the appropriate chapter or the atlas moved to the end of section one.
Assessment: This handbook is well designed and clearly written. Each of the five sections is organized and the objectives are clearly defined. The self-study at the end of each chapter, which includes terminology, questions, and an appropriate case study, aids in the review process. This book would be a useful review and reference book for a school of medical technology to have in its library.
