Overview

PHP is a server-side, HTML-embedded scripting language. ItÕs frequently being used to replace the functionality created by Perl to write CGI scripts). Similar to both HTML and CGI, PHP is faster to program in and faster to execute than CGI. PHP was written specifically for Web site creation, unlike Perl, C, or Java. Companies such as Honda, Patagonia, and Zoom.com all have Web sites utilizing PHP. PHP Advanced for the World Wide Web: Visual QuickPro Guide consists of approximately fifteen chapters of step-by-step content, aimed at teaching specific topics in direct, focused segments. The scripts featured in this book are based on features and capabilities that current PHP users most frequently inquire about (e.g. sessions, authentication, and object-oriented programming). as well as detailing those technologies that will be more important in the future, such as XML and Wireless Access Protocols.

The Barnes & Noble Review
If you're new to PHP, there's no better beginner's book than Larry Ullman's PHP for the World Wide Web: Visual QuickStart Guide -- but that's not the book we're here to tell you about. We'll assume you've already learned some PHP. Ullman's new PHP Advanced for the World Wide Web Visual Quickpro Guide will take you a quantum leap forward -- helping you write PHP code that delivers exceptional efficiency, reliability, security, maintainability, and portability.

Ullman begins with proper code structure and documentation, and a chapter on the appropriate use of objects to modularize your code and partition out processes. Then, it's on to the really useful stuff. Sophisticated database integration techniques. Advanced security, including protecting included files; safeguarding against user-submitted data; SSL, and email encryption. E-commerce applications, from product databases to order completion. Using CURL, PHP's powerful, multi-protocol file transfer library. Building XML applications with PHP. Generating images and PDFs on the fly. Even working with PEAR, PHP's complete framework and distribution system for reusable component development.

If you thought of PHP as just a tool for quick-and-dirty web projects, this book will be a revelation. (Bill Camarda)
