Allow neither preconceptions of puerile pictorial maps (though some such are included), nor the amateurish dust jacket to put you off. Holmes (graphics director, Time) has assembled lovely and pedagogic examples together with explication of map projections, topographic conventions, and high tech cartography. Many examples are too small for study; it would have been better to have presented detail views of larger maps. Has myriad ideas for the graphic artist--resembling, thus, the Tufte books.
