This is the first volume in the Footprints in Time series, designed to involve readers in history through light fantasy/adventure stories. Brothers David and Mitchell are uneasy about the old sea captain's house they've just moved into. Then they discover the ghost of a sailor who fought against Blackbeard, who mischievously grants Mitchell's wish to meet the old pirate. The boys are transported through time to a Caribbean island, where they are captured and forced to serve with the pirate's crew. Their adventures include an encounter with cannibals, severe storms and a naval battle, but the ghost saves them when the battle proves too rough. While not terribly realistic or well-thought-out in its fantasy format, the action scenes and the details of seafaring life are strong enough to hold its desired audience. The book also may be a suitable choice for reluctant readers. Ages 9-12. (Jan.)
