Overview

From the bestselling author of the Black Lagoon series comes a sweet toddler book about a young pig's day at the beach.

Pig Little loves everything about going to the beach—the drive there, the sand, the ice cream, and making hills and holes. (He is great at making hills and holes.)

But all days, even ones at the beach, must end. As the sun sets, Pig Little packs up his bucket full of treasures and waves goodbye. And that night he sets sail on a sea of dreams. This lyrical book of poems takes readers through a toddler's day at the beach—a day full of fun and discovery.

PreS-Gr 1-In a series of quiet vignettes, a piglet prepares for and enjoys a day at the beach. Each spread features a free-verse poem with Pig Little's childlike interpretation of an experience. On the way, he controls the car with the window knob, but lets "-his mom think/that she was doing/all the driving." When they arrive, he stands in the water, appreciating the way the waves splash his feet whenever he asks them to. At lunchtime, his peanut-butter sandwich is "-more SAND/than/WICH," and although he licks his ice-cream cone quickly, the sun licks it too, and he decides "that they/would just/share it." At the end of the day, he worries that the ocean might quench the setting sun. When he is tucked into bed, he decides to enumerate moons rather than stars because he can only count to six. The lush watercolor-and-pencil illustrations feature the bristly porcine family enjoying their outing. Children will appreciate the little pig's oh-so-true-to-life behaviors and child-centric view of the world and will recognize themselves in the warm verse and illustrations. A wonderful choice for family sharing.-Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Deceptively simple poems and warmly realistic watercolor illustrations evoke the highly imaginative world of a child's often poignant and occasionally amusing discoveries. A series of free-verse poems follows Pig Little and his family from their cozy home to the beach where Pig Little wanders off to enjoy his own series of seaside adventures, which children will find pleasingly familiar. At noon, hungry Pig Little discovers that his lunch is "more SAND / than / WICH." As the day wears on and the sun descends, he finds himself hoping that the ocean won't douse its fire. Back at home, Pig Little realizes that he has not really left the beach. After all, he's still got a treasure trove of shells, some sand from his cap and the sun's warmth lingering in his skin. An accessible work that welcomes children to the world of free-verse poetry as it invites them to delight in the day at the beach it renders so artfully. (Picture book/poetry. 4-8)
