Gr 3-6-- Readers will soar off into the clouds with this introduction to the work and challenges of piloting. Pop-ups and other special effects nicely evoke the movements of a flight simulator or a jetliner hitting turbulent air; show a military pilot ejecting from a jet about to crash; and present inside and outside views of a small plane's barrel roll. Ingersoll's flat, clear paintings are impersonal but uncluttered, focusing attention on the aircraft and other machines, but also on boxed blocks of text--the latter will give readers a swift, general idea of the variety of piloting occupations, unsurprisingly emphasizing the more dramatic ones. Less fragile than some pop-ups, this book will still require careful han dling, and may be better suited for display than circulation. --John Peters, New York Public Library
