Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford

This book is a slightly altered version of one originally published more than fifty years ago. The sentence structure is more complex and a number of the stories are longer than many of those written for today's readers. However, many kids will appreciate the stories and poems, especially those youngsters who are advanced readers themselves, as well as those who enjoy being read to by parents or teachers. "Lighthouse" is a poem that will capture the imagination. "A little boy who couldn't sleep/Sat tall up in his bed/and watched the lighthouse flashing/way out at Lobsterhead." And, of course, that young lad decides that when he grows up, he will be the lighthouse keeper and guide the ships to safety. "Rainy Day Sailboat" is a story about a toy sailboat that young readers will enjoy. Twenty-four stories and poems appear in the collection, which is illustrated in the distinctive style of the artist who also illustrated many other books, including The Poky Little Puppy.
