Selected as one of the Best Children's Books of the Year, 2002 by the Bank Street College of Education, this title was reissued as part of the "Penguin Young readers" series. Three cooks—Suzanne, Max and Jake—are preparing to make a pizza. First they measure out the flour to prepare the dough, but it does need to set before they shape, toss and flip it into the perfect round shape. The sauce, alas, is poured from a can, but with the help of an adult, they cut peppers, scallions and broccoli and grate cheese to place on top of the sauce. Then it is all popped into the oven where it bakes and the kids clean up the kitchen and set the table for this anticipated yummy meal. Most kids love pizza and will urge caregivers to try out the recipe given on the last page. Take-out is fine, but what could be more fun than making a pizza from scratch on a cold fall or wintry day. The multicultural cast stresses cooperation and makes food preparation look like great fun. The opening page contains a note to parents and educators about the series and tips for making best use of the book.
