Overview

Native people all over the world have always known that our Earth has places of power. These places of power are also places of beauty and of wisdom. They can be found all over the Earth, even in your own backyard. Michael DeMunn reveals how, when you find a place of power, the Earth speaks to the open heart within you. Young artist Noah Buchanan's remarkable oil paintings capture the magic of nature and the reverence of native traditions

Author Biography: Michael DeMunn is a prominent forester and conservationist who has helped preserve thousands of acres of wild lands in New York State. Michael is of French-English and Seneca-Onondaga Iroquois heritage. Among many awards and honors, he most cherishes his adoption into the Seneca-Hawk Clan where he was given the name "Da Hah' da nyah", which means, "He protects the forest." He grew up exploring the beautiful Finger Lakes region and learning the wonders of the wild. Through his work, his writings, and his frequent nature tours, Michael's life is dedicated to sharing with others, especially children, the joy and wonderment of being attuned to nature. Places of Power is his first book.

Author Biography: Noah Buchanan has always had a deep interest in the symbolic, mythic and heroic found in art and nature. He studied classical drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts, the nation's oldest art school. He graduated from the University of Santa Cruz and is pursuing a Master's degree at the New York Academy of Art in New York City. Noah has illustrated two books for Dawn, the award-winning Places of Power and Spirit Animals, a joyous collaboration with his mother, Victoria Covell, the author.

Explores with children the inherent power of the earth and how to become attuned to it.

American Bookseller

Once in a while, a book will come your way that touches the deepest part of your soul. This will be one of those books for many. Whether interpreted as deeply religious, strongly environmental, or something only the reader can determine, this book will have a unique message for every one. DeMunn's beautiful words are married in rich harmony with Buchanan's artistry. Some young listeners may be able to identify quickly with their "place of power." Others will simply take the author's message with them until they too experience the feelings of nature's "power.

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice

This volume emphasizes the need for each of us, whether child or adult, to have a special place all our own. The author suggests that this place will become a place of power, a place where you will recognize your own uniqueness and place in the world of nature. Although there are various references to the Creator, this is not intended to be a religious book, but rather a book about our spirit lives. The author tells us about how people of all different backgrounds have always searched for a special place. Some found it in a quiet meadow, some in a church, some on a quiet hillside. Wherever you find it, it is a place that gives you the power to connect with the natural world. This place teaches you how important it is to protect our world so that these special places will be here for other generations. This will be a good addition to any religious program, but is also a good addition to general collections.
