Children's Literature - Monserrat Urena

This is a well-researched and insightful read on a landmark supreme-court case. Within its pages, the reader will find carefully crafted prose that sets a clear historic stage for the reader to understand and explore. The text touches upon the atmosphere in existence under the Jim Crow laws and the notion of "separate but equal." The primary figures who helped orchestrate Plessy's landmark train ride jump out from within this book's pages. The book also presents the reader with the enigmatic person of Homer Plessy. Axelrod-Contrada does all this and so much more without losing touch with its targeted audience. I highly recommend this book not only for its laudable presentation of a moment in human history but also for its elevating learning into a complete experience. The prose is strong and effective in pulling the reader into the depths of history and those who helped create it. Anyone can gain from reading this text, regardless of age. Reviewer: Monserrat Urena
