This book opens with information about the fifty to one hundred pound emperor penguin from the Antarctica and ends with the six pound rhinoceros hornbill of Thailand Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Malaysia. Each bird is shown in striking color photographs. The two-page description of a bird contains explanations of its home and a map showing where that area is. The bird's appearance, diet, breeding habits and lifestyle are noted. For instance, the ruby-throated hummingbird that breeds in eastern North America incubates 2 white eggs for 16 days. Its winter migration may include a flight of nearly 3,500 miles to Central America. This amazing little bird feeds on insects, although, its main diet is nectar from various orange and red blossoms. The brown treecreeper of eastern Australia is the nearest thing to a woodpecker that Australia has. Although not related to woodpeckers, they climb trees probing for insects to eat.
