Synopsis

Ordinary people can create extraordinary poems! If amazing ideas and images are always popping into your head, but you don't know what to do with them, How To Write Poems is the answer.

From learning the basics, to finding out what "onomatopoeia" means and how to use it, you'll discover everything you need to write perfect poems.

Children's Literature

The QEB "How to Write" Series sets out to teach children to write in different genres using a "kid-friendly" informal manner, with colorful pages and an astonishing array of text features (sidebars in the form of Post-it notes, torn journal pages, and bulletin board messages). The poetry edition covers a myriad of poetic forms and strategies. As an adult, however, I find the scattered layout of the pages disjointed and distracting. There is also little to inspire a poetic mind. Every glossy page screams graphic artist gone overboard. Third graders and up might disagree and find me a bit old-fashioned. Be that as it may, any book that promises a child the recipe for the "perfect poem" is setting itself up for failure. There is no perfect poem. Poetry is art and, therefore, gloriously imperfect.
