School Library Journal

Gr 6-8-A solid overview of a hot report topic. Chapters describe the problem, the police point of view, racial concerns, and possible remedies. The author makes a commendable effort to show both sides of the issue, and specific cases are used to illustrate points. Black-and-white photographs of police in action and citizens calling for reform make the stories come alive; political cartoons add interest to the straightforward writing; and wide margins make for comfortable reading. A list of organizations that provide information about police practices is included with addresses and phone numbers. A detailed index and bibliography make the material accessible. Neal Bernards's Police Brutality (1994) is a better choice for class discussions, and Police Brutality (1991, both Greenhaven) is more in-depth. Anderson's book covers recent incidents such as the Rodney King beating and has wider appeal for a slightly younger audience.-Sandra L. Doggett, Linganore High School, Frederick, MD
