Library Journal
Evans (retired, Warwickshire Cty. Council) here aims to make accessible the political themes in Shaw's dramatic works, following the development of his social thinking. In short essays, she presents bite-sized bits of biographical information, as well as brief descriptions of his work at the time. Laying the foundation with Shaw's arrival in London and his early works with the Fabian Society, Evans proceeds to cover his entire career. Unfortunately, she does not offer a close reading of the plays, instead providing a broad overview with an emphasis on Shaw's political and social views. These views are not new topics in Shaw studies, but this work does fulfill its promise of making Shaw accessible to a readership.
