School Library Journal

Gr 3-7-- In each volume, selected animals and an occasional plant typical of a habitat are described. The double-page spreads feature at least one striking, high-quality, full-color photograph. A brief paragraph presents some information, and more detail is included in the labeled captions and in short paragraphs scattered around the layout. This format and the catchy chapter titles make exploring each page an adventure. The text is very readable and generally accurate. However, there are no maps or indications as to which life forms inhabit the same area, or in which global regions they may be found. For more detailed coverage and an environmental approach, use Landau's Tropical Rain Forests around the World (Watts, 1990), Simon's Deserts (Morrow, 1990), Bramwell's Oceans (Watts, 1984; o.p.), Segaloff and Erickson's A Reef Comes to Life (Watts, 1991), and Zim's Corals (Morrow, 1966; o.p.). --Meryl Silverstein, American Museum of Natural History, New York City
