Gr 5 Up-These books introduce artistic movements, and give details on when and where the featured artists worked, and what was going on in the world during that time. Biographical information on specific painters includes personal details, descriptions and examples of key works, at least one reproduction, and often a photograph of the artist. A four- or five-page history of the movement precedes the profiles. These titles serve readers well as introductions to famous artists and artistic movements, but they do not provide in-depth research for advanced art assignments. Examples of paintings are clearly labeled, but there are too few of them. The texts refer to works that are not shown, and readers will have to use other resources to see them.-Julie E.
