Children's Literature - Cheryl Williams Chang

This book is one in a series entitled "Nocturnal Animals." The easy reader incorporates simple text with large font. Every page in the book is represented with an attractive, crisp photograph of different types of porcupines in different settings. This nonfiction book revolves around the habitat, lifestyle, and social aspects of a porcupine. One interesting fact is that a porcupine can live for as long as 18 years. Another interesting fact is that most porcupines live all of their life alone. A baby porcupine is called a porcupette. When a porcupine is upset or scared it raises its quills and lashes its tail. First graders and kindergartners will enjoy reading this book either alone or with the assistance of an adult. A table of contents, a glossary, a reference page of Internet sites, a listing of additional books about porcupines, and an index are included in this book. In an elementary school setting, this will be a nice addition in a geography or science class. Reviewer: Cheryl Williams Chang
