Overview
What does or did the Asian economic miracle offer to women in Malaysia—a second generation newly industrializing country (NIC)? Representing a journey of some fifteen years, this anthology traces the changing position of Malaysian women as the country is transformed from an agrarian economy to an export-led industrialized and information technology based society, aspiring to lock itself into the global economy. It also attempts to link feminist theory and practice articulated in the nascent Malaysian women's movement as it responds to the key challenges confronting Malaysian women.

Arguing that women form the backbone of the Malaysian economy, Ng (women's studies, U. of Putra, Malaysia) asserts that women will not merely be affected by economic changes, but will bring about change themselves. This compilation of articles<-->written over a period of years by Ng, with some contributions from several co-authors<-- >examines industrialization and Malaysian women over the last 15 years as this country transformed itself from an agrarian-based economy to one driven by industrial and information technology. The essays span a range of subjects, including rural development, new technologies such as telecommunications and computerization, and emerging feminist movements in Malaysia. Annotation c.
