Overview
Bassiouni (former chairman of the UN Security Council to Investigate Violations of International Humanitarian Law in the former Yugoslavia) presents 35 contributions that academically explore post-conflict justice in terms of retributive and restorative justice and, to a lesser extent, in terms of restoring and enhancing failed or weakened justice systems. Early contributions discuss the values and goals of accountability and modalities of accountability. Various models of post conflict justice that have been tried in various regions of the world are examined and assessed. Final chapters explore the tensions between goals and strategies of military peacekeeping operations and civilian post-conflict justice efforts, logistical problems faced by UN justice efforts, and differences between international participants regarding goals and strategies.
