Overview

Power Programming in HP OpenView first presents an overview of current network management protocols - and equally important, current telecommunications industry practices. Several typical telecommunications network management systems are discussed. These fundamentals are critical to any developer new to creating telecommunications network management applications - and they're a useful refresher even for experienced developers. In the context of telecommunications network management, the book then presents the overall architecture of the UNIX-based HP OpenView platforms - both Release 4.0 of the HP OpenView Network Node Manager platform, and Release 4.1 of the HP OpenView Distributed Management platform.

Subtitled "Developing CMIS Applications". This is a Hewlett-Packard Press book for software developers and project managers doing applications running under this object-oriented, UNIX-based network management platform. The authors are former HP software engineers who did OpenView programming and technical training. Their book describes the OpenView Distributed Management platform oriented to the telecomm market (uses OSI CMIP and CMISE protocols and services); a separate SNMP book is being written. Part 1 is an overview of network management and current practices, Part 2 describes the OpenView architecture and the integration of its subsystems, Part 3 details the APIs, generators, and services. The accompanying CD-ROM provides the commented C code, and expanded sample applications, from the book.
